Seventy-one University of California executives will share $770,000 in raises, part of an effort that UC officials say is to bring their pay up to that of their peers at other universities.
The equity increases were approved Wednesday behind closed doors by the Compensation Committee of the UC Board of Regents. They are expected to get approval today by the full board during their meeting at the UCSF Mission Bay campus.
"They have the greatest disparity to the comparable positions elsewhere," said Regent Judith Hopkinson, chairwoman of the regents compensation committee. "These people are underpaid."
The pay increases ranged from $33,000 for Robert Hogan, CFO of the UC San Diego Medical Center, bringing his salary to $210,500 a year, to $1,000 for Christina Maslach, vice provost for undergraduate education at UC Berkeley, who will make $169,000 annually.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Majority Leader John Boehner and Majority Whip Roy Blunt are leading the list of GOP policy makers who want West Virginia to get out of their way.
Casey said the FEC report of Democratic Candidate Congressman Alan Mollohan, by contrast, paints a different picture. Mollohans contributions this quarter from Democratic politicians in Congress and their PACs is only 2.1 percent.
It is clear that the big bankroll for Mr. Wakim comes from the same people who vote against West Virginia time and time again on the issues that are important to West Virginians, Casey said. These are the same folks that ran up huge budget deficits, forced through tax cuts for the wealthiest few, and did nothing to stop rising gas prices and rising health care costs.
