First allotment for MBBS, BDS done

: The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations has carried out the first allotment of seats for the MBBS and BDS courses in Government and self-financing colleges in the State. The allotment details were put up at 7 a.m. on Sunday on the websites www.cee.kerala.gov.in and http://cee.kerala.nic.in.

A press note issued here said the students who have received allotments should pay the required fees at the designated branches of Canara Bank on July 24 and 25. Details were available on the websites.

The allotment has been done for 1,304 seats in the two courses. In the MBBS course, 587 seats have been allotted in the State merit category; 24 for the economically backward category (in two colleges); 123 for Ezhava; 109 for Muslim; 69 for Backward Hindu; 27 for Latin Catholic category; 14 for Backward Christian; 109 for Scheduled Castes and one for Scheduled Tribe.

College loan rules undergoing changes

The rules for college loans are undergoing a host of changes. Here are the biggest changes and what they mean for you:

Fixed rates on Stafford and PLUS loans:

Since late 1992, the two largest federal student loan programs have come with a variable interest rate. Starting July 1, the rate for new Stafford loans will be fixed at 6.8 percent and the rate for new PLUS loans will be 8.5 percent, which could benefit borrowers if interest rates continue to rise. Variable rates on loans issued before July 1 that have not been consolidated will continue to be reset once a year.

Higher loan limits:

Under the old rules, college freshmen could borrow up to $2,625 in Stafford funds. The new limit will be $3,500 starting July 1, 2007. Caps for sophomores will go from $2,500 to $4,500, and graduate and professional students will be able to borrow $12,000 a year instead of $10,000.
