A Des Plaines man nearly died 30 years ago but the heroic efforts of his sons and paramedics saved his life. One of those paramedics is now Fire Chief John Heavey who the Des Plaines man wanted to thank once again.

Ralph Corned was only 42 when he experienced chest pains at his home on Apr. 26, 1976. "I was walking from the living room into the kitchen," he said. He remembers nothing else until he was in a hospital bed moving from the emergency room into the intensive care unit.

However, the rest of his family remember what else happened. Ralph had two sons, Kevin and Jim who were 15 and 13 at the time. Both boys were in Boy Scouts and received training in First Aid.

Marilyn Conrad, Ralph's wife of 47 years as of July 4, 2006, said, "At that time, the Boy Scouts were not allowed to do CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)." The scouts only learned mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in the program.

On the same day, HSBC, which offered possibly the best student bribe of all last year with an MP3 player, announced that this year students will get an MP4 player. It holds around 250 music tracks, stores up to four hours of video footage and has a built-in radio. Alternatively, they can opt for 10 free CDs from CD Wow. To be eligible for either of HSBC's offers, students have to open an account before 7 October.
