Price of college steeper after loan rate increase
Higher interest rates on student loans could make it more difficult for students to afford college.
The interest rate on new Stafford Loans, the most common college student loan, jumped from 5.3 percent to 6.8 percent July 1.
The interest rate on existing Stafford Loans rose from 5.3 percent to 7.14 percent.
Students in Florida will pay an estimated increase of $1,985 to $2,385 in Stafford student loans because of the interest rate hike, according to a report produced by the Campaign for America's Future, a progressive political action group.
"It will definitely make people think twice about taking out loans," said Alice Harrell, a graduate student from Crystal River who is taking a summer course at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

Nolbert Reyna named Student Activities Specialist at SOSU
DURANT, Okla. -- Southeastern Oklahoma State University has named Nolbert Reyna as the Student Activities Specialist at the University.
Reyna graduated from DeLeon (Texas) High School, where he played tennis and participated in a number of organizations.
He is a graduate of Tarleton State University with a degree in International Business. Reyna was heavily involved in activities on campus and was a member of the Executive Board of Tarleton Alternative Transportation. He was instrumental in starting this program, which was a designated driving program for the students.
Reyna said he has decided to switch careers, having started out in the banking business.
"I was involved in banking all through college," Reyna said. "After graduation, I was a full-time Mortgage Loan Officer Trainee and I realized banking wasn't the career path for me."
Reyna said one of his goals is to increase and improve Greek life at Southeastern.
