N. Providence savings bank is up for sale
A Boston-based company that services lenders of student loans has applied for permission from federal regulators to purchase Union Federal Savings Bank.

A Boston-based company created to service lenders offering nongovernmental student loans has requested permission from federal regulators to buy the Union Federal Savings Bank in North Providence.
The First Marblehead Corp. announced this week that it has applied for approval from the Office of Thrift Supervision to purchase the single-office savings bank in North Providence. The purchase price has not been disclosed.
Union Federal Savings Bank specializes in "flexible, residential mortgage plans and has enormous good will in the community, reflected in its local and loyal depositor base," Eli Neusner, vice president of Fleishman-Hillard, the public relations firm representing First Marblehead, said in an e-mail.

The ratings are based on the quality of the student loan portfolio, the credit enhancement provided, and the sound legal structure. The ratings address the ability of the trust to pay note principal at maturity and pay timely interest. The ratings do not address the ability of the trust to pay carry-over interest, nor do they address the ability of auction rate noteholders to successfully redeem their notes at an auction now or in the future.
The senior series 2006A-1 notes are issued under the Amended and Restated Indenture of Trust dated June 1, 2006 between FSFC and U.S. Bank N.A. The proceeds of the senior series 2006A-1 notes will be used to purchase student loans, pay accrued interest and premiums, make deposits to the acquisition and reserve funds, and to pay the costs of issuance.
