Deeds day for needy women
SEVENTEEN widows, spinsters and divorcees yesterday became the first Bahraini women to be given government homes under a new law.
They were presented with the deeds to the newly-built homes by Shaikha Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad and chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Women.
Some women have been awarded government homes in the past, but it was not a general practice because there were no specific regulations stating that they were eligible.
This changed after negotiations in 2004 between the Cabinet and the Supreme Council for Women.
The council said the old rules discriminated against women in need, or who had to support themselves or their families.
A new law, giving such women the right to government homes, was ratified in March last year.

McNair relishes 'down-time' in Mississippi
